History of Northumberland Farrer Park
According to URA, Northumberland Farrer Park is a subzone under the Rochor Planning area in Singapore’s Central Region. The neighbourhood borders Rangoon Road, Serangoon Road. Northumberland Road, Race Course Road, Bukit Timah Road, and Tekka Lane.
The name Farrer comes from R. J. Farrer, who served as the Municipal Assessor who later became the President of the Municipal Commissioners in the 1920s. Sitting close to Farrer Park is historical colourful Little India.
Farrer Park is well known as home to the Singapore Sporting Club’s Serangoon Road Race Course, the first racecourse in Singapore developed in 1842. The weekend horse races attracted large crowds, with most being Europeans. The majority of the residents of this neighbourhood were Indians who practised farming.
The neighbourhood also has a historical significance in Singapore’s aviation, with the first plane to fly in the country flying over Farrer Park in 1911. Farrer Park was famous for its playing fields, a sports venue and a Sports House, which served as the headquarter for the National Sports Promotion Board between 1971 and 1973.
Today, Farrer Park is a vibrant estate with plenty of amenities allowing residents to eat, shop, and play nearby. It is served by Farrer Park MRT along the North-East Line, close to Farrer Park Hospital, Farrer Park Tennis Centre, and many other key amenities.
